Information for early to mid-career researchers and clinicians

Our World Muscle Society (WMS) community is a supportive and welcoming one. We celebrate science and discovery, share knowledge and support one another in pursuit of scientific advances.

The WMS considers early to mid-career researchers and clinicians as typically those who are still studying/training and/or within five years of their last relevant formal training, e.g., five years after being awarded their PhD or becoming specialists in the field.

The field of neuromuscular disorders is broad, encompassing a range of conditions that impair the functioning of the muscles, either directly, being pathologies of the voluntary muscle, or indirectly, being pathologies of the peripheral nervous system or neuromuscular junctions.

For early to mid-career researchers and clinicians, knowing how to access the right support and meet the people who have the potential to influence your career can seem overwhelming.

At the WMS, as part of our commitment to advancing the science around neuromuscular disorders, we are committed to supporting early career researchers and clinicians. You can find out more about our efforts as a Society to support early to mid-career researchers and clinicians on the WMS website

At this year's Congress, we have tried to cater for early to mid-career researchers and clinicians. The Congress provides an ideal opportunity to meet other people working in the field, learn from them, discover new breakthroughs and share your own experiences.

Our Pre-Congress Teaching Course, where neuromuscular specialists provide an in-depth overview of the field of neuromuscular disorders including modern approaches to patient evaluation and developments in myology runs immediately before the main Congress. We encourage all physicians, researchers, therapists, and neuropathologists interested in learning more about neuromuscular disorders from leaders in the field to attend.

As well as benefitting from the scientific presentations and networking available at WMS 2025, we have created dedicated opportunities for early to mid-career myologists to get as much out of the Congress as possible.

Regional Networks and first-time attendee reception

Tuesday 7th October, 15:30-16:30, Hall G

The WMS launched its Regional Networks earlier this year to build global bridges for neuromuscular care for each of the global regions with the aim of facilitating collaboration, learning and support across each region: Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America; and North America.

Find out more about the networks, including how to join, on the WMS website. To introduce these networks to our Congress delegates, we will be welcoming everyone to WMS 2025 with an information session hosted by our Regional Network leads. Each Network Lead will share a brief summary of the work so far and the ambitions of the Network across each region.

The session will build on our recent efforts to provide a platform for myologists working in regions where research and care for patients with neuromuscular disorders may be less well resourced. This informal gathering is designed to foster connections, strengthen professional networks, and facilitate discussions on potential collaborations with colleagues from your part of the world. First-time attendees are encouraged to attend as an opportunity to meet fellow delegates, particularly those from your own region.

Peer networking for early to mid-career myologists

Thursday 9th October, 13:45-14:45, Hall G

This session is a unique opportunity for early to mid-career delegates to meet the newly elected WMS Board representative and to collaborate with fellow early to mid-career attendees to shape future activities within the WMS and the WMS Congress. This is a unique opportunity for participants to have their say in early to mid-career focussed content at future WMS Congresses, journal content, and WMS activities. Session attendees will also gain access to a valuable international professional peer network, providing opportunities for future collaborations, sharing expertise, and career development.

Interesting Cases Discussion

Those who have attended the Pre-Congress Teaching Course will have found this part of the course particularly interesting. After successful Congress sessions in the last two years, we are extending this session and moving it into the main Congress hall for 2025. We'll work together to use our combined, global knowledge in our field to solve difficult, unusual or as yet unsolved cases.

Myology Café

WMS members may already be aware of our bi-monthly virtual networking events. For WMS 2025, we are once again bringing the virtual into the real world.

Throughout the Congress, we will have a series of Café sessions dedicated to different discussion topics. You'll have the opportunity to meet some of our committees and influence what they focus on over the coming months. You'll get to meet colleagues from around the world to discuss the latest advances in the field of neuromuscular disorders. And you'll get to sit in a comfortable and modern coffee bar and enjoy your favourite barista-made beverage.

The WMS is here for you. We want to do all we can to support your professional advancement as you work to advance the science and care of patients with neuromuscular disorders.

Profile photos

To support early career researchers and clinicians as you raise your professional profile, we will once again be providing opportunities to have professional profile photos taken. You'll be able to use these photos for presentations, programmes and more. Sessions will take place in room -2.62 at the following times:
